LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Police released footage of the Wednesday shooting of a man who was hiding behind a mattress in an abandoned home.
Officers were responding to reports of a person using drugs outside a house when the incident occurred, The Courier-Journal reported.
Police announced their presence multiple times upon entering the abandoned home and throughout their search for the suspect. They discovered Bruce Warrick, 38, hiding behind a box spring leaning against a wall.
Officer Sarah Stumler told Warrick to show his hands, then fired a single shot, hitting the suspect in the gut. Warrick did not have any weapons on him and police did not find any inside the house.
Officers rendered first aid, applying pressure to Warrick’s wound until paramedics arrived. Warrick remains in critical condition after undergoing surgery. No officers were injured.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Per policy, Stumler is on administrative leave.
In a statement, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer called for patience from the community as officials investigate the shooting.
