KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee Medical Center has been accused in a lawsuit that says a Jacksboro Police Department detective was given an overdose of pain medication while he was being treated for injuries suffered in a car crash.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the wrongful death lawsuit was filed Friday by the family of Det. Mike Starret, who died in January.
The suit seeks $7.5 million in damages.
Hospital spokesman Jim Ragonese said he couldn’t comment on the lawsuit, but says the hospital was deeply saddened by Starret’s death. Starrett, 54, died suddenly while recuperating from injuries. According to the lawsuit, the widow was told the Starret died from a blood clot.
But a medical examiner later determined he had lethal levels of a painkiller in his system when he died.
