WINSLOW, N.J. — A gunman who attempted to rob a Wawa was tackled by a customer who held him until police arrived.

Alexander Ray, 26, entered the gas station Wednesday with a gun and told three employees to get on the floor, NJ.com reported. The customer, only identified as Darryl, tackled Ray and fought him until police arrived.

Video shows Ray pistol-whip Darryl in an attempt to break free. Police arrived and found Ray disarmed and arrested him. They later discovered the gun was not loaded.

Both men were treated at the hospital for facial lacerations and bruises and released. Ray is in police custody.

Police Chief George Smith told the publication that while he believes Darryl is a hero for attempting to stop the gunman, he warns others not to follow suit.

“If it turned bad, it really would have been a loss for his family and himself,” he said. “The outcome today was great, however we don’t tell people to do that.”

Ray was charged with aggravated assault, robbery and weapons offenses.
