Oakland city officials and police union leaders were unsuccesful Tuesday in their attempts to reach a last-minute agreement by a 5 p.m. deadline to prevent the layoffs of 80 of the city’s 776 officers.
Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said OPD wasn’t counting on a last-minute agreement, so officers who were slated to be laid off came into police headquarters earlier Tuesday to turn in their equipment and fill out paperwork.
The police union said it would agree to concessions in its pension program if the city guaranteed a three-year moratorium on layoffs. The city had countered by offering a one-year freeze on layoffs, saying it couldn’t make a longer guarantee because of its precarious budget situation.
