ORLANDO — Orlando police on Monday released two videos that showed the moments that led up to an officer-involved shooting earlier this month near Pine Hills.

Officer Jonathan Mills shot a 17-year-old boy in a stolen car during a traffic stop in a shopping plaza in the 5100 block of North Lane on Jan. 16.

The videos are from Mills’ body cam and surveillance footage from a nearby business. Police conducted a traffic stop after he saw the driver was not wearing a seat belt, a report said.

His body cam video shows him getting out of the passenger side of an unmarked vehicle and pulled out his weapon. The officers can be heard yelling “Stop! Orlando police! Stop” and the vehicle moves forward before stopping.

Officers then start hitting the vehicle with what appear to be batons while yelling “Put your hands up.” The vehicle reverses into a parked vehicle, before moving forward toward Mills.

Mills then fires four shots into the vehicle. The vehicle fled before crashing into a vacant home on Stoney Brook Lane. The teen and two other suspects fled on foot.

The suspect, who was not seriously injured, is facing charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a motor vehicle, fleeing and eluding and grand theft. The other two suspects remain outstanding. A State Attorney’s Office spokeswoman said it is still deciding if it will charge the teen as an adult. He is at the Juvenile Detention Center.

The vehicle was stolen out of Orange County, according to police. Police realized the vehicle was stolen after it crashed, police said. Mills was hired by the department in 2012 and has been a member of the tactical unit for about a year. The incident was the first of two Orlando police officer-involved shootings in three days.

Officers on Jan. 18 fatally shot a 28-year-old man who was armed with an air soft gun that officers said looked real.
