At night, avoid bright white light inside your patrol car. Turning on your overhead dome light moments before exiting at night, for example, can be extremely detrimental to your ability to adapt to darkness.
Ways you can cut down on the brightness of a dome light include lining your overhead dome with heat-resistant red tape, replacing your dome light cover with a red taillight cover, coating your dome light with heat resistant red paint or replacing the white bulb in your dome light with a red or amber light, which can be found in most auto shops.
