LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. — A 59-year-old man who was involved in a police standoff 17 years ago was shot and killed by officers early Tuesday after leading them on a chase through an Adirondack tourist town and opening fire on state troopers and sheriff’s deputies.

Police began their pursuit of Patrick Penders late Monday after he fired several times at the home of a female acquaintance in Warrensburg. Warren County Sheriff Bud York said neither the woman nor her daughter, who called 911, was hurt. One deputy was treated for a bullet graze after the shootout.

Penders got out of the SUV and fired at deputies and state troopers, who returned fire and killed him, York said. State Police Maj. William Sprague said four troopers were involved in the chase and three of them fired at Penders.
