JACKSBORO, Texas — A Jack County Sheriff’s deputy and a local wrecker service driver were struck by a vehicle while working the scene of an accident Sunday morning.
The incident happened around 7 a.m. on U.S. Highway 380 and U.S. Highway 281 west of Jacksboro.
According to a Texas Department of Public Safety news release:
The deputy and driver were helping a DPS trooper with a crash investigation at the scene of a minor accident.
An Infinity sedan was traveling west on U.S. 380 approaching the intersection with U.S. 281 during heavy fog and wet road conditions.
The sedan failed to see the intersection, due to the conditions, and slid through the intersection into the barrow ditch, striking the deputy and wrecker driver.
According to a Facebook post by the Jacksboro Police Department, Air Evac was unable to fly, so the deputy was taken by ambulance to John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth.
Originally, it was believed that he had internal head injuries and multiple fractures, but it was determined through multiple CT scans at JPS that the deputy didn’t have any internal or brain injuries, the post stated.
The deputy suffered multiple fractures that will require one or more surgeries, but was listed in critical but stable condition, as of 11 a.m. Sunday.
The wrecker driver was transported to a local hospital with injuries that weren’t believed to be life threatening. The DPS Trooper was not struck.
The driver of the sedan was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
No charges have been filed. DPS is investigating the crash.
