CANADIAN COUNTY, Okla. — A man was caught on dash camera video attempting to steal a cruiser with a K-9 in the backseat during a traffic stop, KFOR reported.
An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper pulled over 23-year-old Benjamin Henson on Jan. 10 for following too closely and unsafe lane changes. The trooper asked him a few questions, and Henson’s answers seemed erratic.
“Where are you coming from today?” the trooper asked.
“Oh, let’s see,” Henson said. “Back friggin I don’t know what the hell the exit’s called.”
“What town is it?” the trooper asked.
“Ah, shoot, man! You got me all messed up,” Henson said.
The trooper wrote a warning for Henson’s driving before determining there was reasonable suspicion to search Henson’s vehicle. Seconds later, troopers found several large bags of marijuana inside the car.
Henson was handcuffed as troopers continued to search the vehicle. Henson moved the handcuffs from his back to the front of his body, hopped in the driver’s seat and took off.
The K-9, Cash, was in the back and along for the ride. Henson crashed into a fence then jumped out to continue on foot.
Troopers were able to find Henson and arrested him. They discovered his license had been revoked.
The department said the dash cam video can serve as a lesson for other officers.
“It really opens your eyes that nobody’s immune to having something like that happen,” Lt. John Vincent told the news site.
