DENVER - A young woman was shot and killed by police in Denver early Monday morning.

The officers were responding to a call of a suspicious vehicle in the alley behind 2521 Newport Street a little after 7 a.m. Police Chief Robert White says the officers ran the license plates and determined the vehicle was stolen.

When officers approached the vehicle, the female driver hit one officer with the car, said Chief White. Both officers fired on the suspects, fatally injuring the young woman.

The injured officer is hospitalized with what is believed to be a fractured leg, Chief White said.

A total of five people were in the vehicle, White said during a news conference Monday morning.

“It appears everyone in the vehicle was very young in age,” said White.

A light-colored sedan appears to have crashed into a building in the alley.

Both officers will be placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, which is standard procedure.

The Denver Police Department initially said two people had been shot in the alley. Officials revised that at about 8:10 a.m., confirming only one person had been shot.
