GREENVILLE, S.C. — A man fired shots into a police headquarters and struck an officer three times Monday after killing his stepfather earlier that night.

Fox Carolina reports 23-year-old Evan Bennett approached the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center and fired multiple shotgun rounds into a plate glass window of the locked building.

An officer who was called for backup was struck three times outside the building after Bennett opened fire, suffering a wound in the forearm and two in the side.

The officer returned fire once at Bennett, but did not hit him, according to the report.

Bennett then shot himself and died at the scene.

The officer, who’s been with the Greenville Police Department five years, was transported to a hospital and is undergoing surgery Tuesday.

Police believe the incident is connected to the killing of Bennett’s stepfather, 58-year-old Gregory Jones, earlier Monday.

Jones was found shot dead at the residence he shared with Bennett.

Police are investigating the incidents. The name of the wounded officer has not been released.
