ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — An officer who saved an armed suicidal man from himself is being commended for his efforts after the whole incident was caught on video, WWLP reported.

Officer Jamie Hardy was responding to a call about a suicidal man. When 39-year-old David Bundy came outside to greet the officer, Hardy noticed a knife in the man’s hand.

In the video, Hardy calmly talks to Bundy, telling him he doesn’t want to hurt himself.

The officer told the publication his focus was on safety, and that incidents like this one can escalate “in the blink of an eye.”.

“Nobody wants to hurt anybody else. Our job is, we’re out here protecting people,” Hardy said in his interview.

Bundy was taken into custody without injury.

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Charles Hasty told WWLP that Hardy’s skills prevented a deadly situation and the officer did everything right.

Bundy is thankful now for the officer’s actions that day.

“If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be here today,” Bundy said to the publication.
