BRADENTON, Fla. — A Florida sergeant is grateful to be alive after a deputy stepped in to perform CPR after he suffered a heart attack while on duty.

According to WSVN News, Sergeant Brett Getman made an arrest and had arrived at a substation to complete paperwork when he suffered a heart attack. “I started doing my report and I blacked out,” Getman told WSVN News.

Deputy Jared Leggett was close to Getman when the medical emergency took place and immediately jumped into action. The deputy initially couldn’t find a pulse after Getman passed out. “From that point forward, it was on. The race was on,” said Leggett.

The deputy started CPR and then retrieved a nearby AED, which eventually led to Getman’s heart beating again.

Getman believes someone was watching over him that day and interceded on his behalf because Leggett normally wrote his reports inside his cruiser. He was in the office that day at the substation and was able to witness the sergeant in distress, according to the report.

“I know I have a second chance at this life, and I know that I have something more to give,” Getman said. “All the stars aligned that day that he was in the office and not somewhere else doing other work. I have guardian angels I like to call them these days because if he wasn’t there I would not be here.”
