SAN FRANCISCO — A police protest took place early Tuesday evening after police arrested a man who bit police and tried to flee over a citation for riding his bicycle on the sidewalk Friday.
Police Chief Greg Suhr told ABC 7 that after undercover officers told D’Paris Williams to stop riding his bike on the sidewalk — an order which he ignored — he began walking away towards his apartment as they attempted to issue him a citation.
When an officer grabbed his shoulder, he bit the officer.
“They’re thinking, ‘Does this person have a gun? Is the bicycle stolen? Is the person up to something else?’” said Suhr, of Williams’ overreaction.
A bystander began filming as three more members of the neighborhood intervened.
Orlando Rodriguez, 25, Antoine Bradford, 22, and Masai Bradford, 24, joined the altercation, and were quickly detained as backup officers arrived, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
“The officers are also being punched at, right? Our rule is that they can use whatever force reasonable to overcome the resistance,” said Suhr.
Two officers were sent to the hospital for their injuries, and three more were hurt but did not seek medical help, according to ABC7.
The four men were arrested and also injured, but have not yet been charged, pending an investigation.
