TEMPE, Ariz. — Tempe police Wednesday announced the biggest drug bust in the city’s history, netting more than 200 pounds of illicit substances.

“Today is a great day, although today is also a disturbing day,” said Tempe Police Chief Tom Ryff. Disturbing, he said, because the size of the bust may be merely a drop in the bucket. Officers seized 145 pounds of methamphetamine, 114 pounds of cocaine and 11 ounces of heroin, in addition to cash and cars, for a total value of more than $7 million.

“We hit these guys as hard as we could and we were able to dismantle a whole drug organization, not really just one, but three,” said Commander Kim Hale. Officers also arrested 130 alleged dealers, many of them armed with assault rifles and handguns, police said.
