ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A 14-year-old Rochester boy has been charged with attempted murder and assault after the weekend shooting of a rookie police officer who is brain-injured and fighting for his life.
Police say Tyquan Rivera was arrested after going to police headquarters with his lawyer Tuesday morning to answer questions about the shooting Saturday of Officer Anthony DiPonzio, who remains in guarded condition.
The 23-year-old officer was shot in the back of the head while investigating complaints of drug activity in a Rochester neighborhood. He underwent brain surgery, but the prognosis for his recovery remains unclear.
Police say DiPonzio and two fellow officers had questioned a group of people on the street. As they turned to walk away from the group, shots were fired.
