STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Special Investigator Diane DiGiacomo, 52, passed away after battling cancer she received from prolonged exposure to toxic materials following the attacks on Sept. 11, Staten Island Advance reported.

DiGiacomo was best known for her role on the Animal Planet television show “Animal Precinct” which ran from June 2001 to February 2008.

During her 20 years with the ASPCA, DiGiacomo investigated reports of animal cruelty and abuse, arrested abusers and rescued animals from their unsafe homes. She also spent weeks in neighborhoods near ground zero, rescuing animals trapped in apartments.

DiGiacomo was diagnosed with breast cancer that metastasized to her brain in Sept. 2014.

She is survived by her two sisters, brother and a son.
