CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Cambridge police have filed a criminal complaint and notified the Department of Children and Families after a 27-year-old Dorchester woman led police on a high-speed chase and then crashed, flipping her car while her toddler was inside.
A Cambridge police officer reportedly saw a car drive through a red light around 1:36 a.m. at the intersection of Concord Avenue and Walden Street. When the officer switched on his lights, the driver allegedly accelerated, fleeing at a rate of 65 to 70 mph on Walden Street. The officer lost sight of the car, but then discovered it had crashed into two parked motor vehicles near Hubbard Avenue and was flipped onto the driver’s side.

After the officer called for medical backup, he approached the car, which was smoking, and noticed the airbags were deployed. He heard an infant crying inside, so he opened the passenger’s side door and the female driver told him to take her baby. The officer used his knife to deflate the airbag, at which point the woman handed over the boy. The infant did not appear to be injured.
After the officer helped the woman out of the car, she reportedly asked for her baby back, at which point the officer asked what happened. She allegedly replied, “I got scared because I have a suspended license.”
EMS arrived and evaluated the woman and her infant son. She denied medical treatment on scene, but the child was taken for further evaluation. Both had minor injuries.
Upon his return to headquarters, the officer said he immediately called the Department of Children and Families to file a report.
