PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon State Police trooper injured in a Christmas Day shooting had his third surgery Wednesday morning and remains in critical condition, police officials said.
Trooper Nic Cederberg’s latest operation went as expected and he’s “on a good trajectory considering the trauma he suffered,” state police officials said in a Facebook post.
Cederberg’s wife, Portland police officer Hayley Shelton, has been by his side throughout the surgeries, they said. Shelton is a seven-year veteran of the Portland agency and is currently assigned to the North Precinct.
Cederberg, 32, who has worked for state police for seven years and is a military veteran, was shot several times by homicide suspect James Tylka on Sunday night, said Sgt. David Thompson, a spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Police have not said how many times or where Cederberg was shot.
Tylka, 30, was killed by officers after he fled the scene of a homicide in King City, Thompson said. Tylka shot and injured Cederberg in a shootout, Thompson said.
Tylka shot his estranged wife, Kate Tylka Armand, outside his house after she had dropped off their 11-month-old daughter for a visit, Thompson said.
The City of North Plains and North Plains police are planning a candlelight vigil for Cederberg on Monday, Jan. 2 at 6 p.m. The vigil will be held at the Jessie Mays Community Center 30975 S.W. Hilcrest St. in North Plains.
