Securing your radio hand mic

I wear my radio on my weak side and run the cord behind my back, under my strong side arm, and then clipped to my strong side epaulet. I then pull the cord taut and secure it under the two belt keepers I wear at the back of my belt.

This serves several purposes:

1. If I’m in a fight and my opponent grabs the mic, the cord isn’t long enough to be wrapped around my neck and used to choke me. Of course a hard pull on the cord could pull it through the keepers but putting it under two keepers makes this less likely.

2. There is constant tension on the mike so it doesn’t bounce around when I’m active. Since I started wearing the mic like this, I have never had it bounce off my shoulder while running.

3. If the mic does come off my shoulder (the clip popped off the back during a fight and the mic did come off) it is hanging from a shorter cord and easier to find.

I like the mic on my strong side shoulder because if I’m shooting, I can reach across my body and still operate the mic with my weak hand. For me, the slightly tighter position of reaching across my body is a better shooting position. That’s just personal preference but I think the decision of where to wear the mic should be made with that in mind.
