The suspect’s car eventually crashed on a highway as authorities tried to catch up. Police said the suspect, who was identified as 29-year-old Jose Alfredo Barajas on Monday, was found dead.

An autopsy revealed that Barajas died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

The deputy and his ridealong, who a spokesperson identified as an off-duty employee of the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office, were taken to a hospital after being shot and hit by broken glass. Both are expected to make a full recovery.
