DENVER — The family of a police officer hit by a car during a student protest in Denver says he has been able to speak to them for the first time since the Dec. 3 accident.
Relatives of Officer John Adsit released the following statement Wednesday:
“The family of Officer John Adsit wanted to share that John’s 10th surgery today went well. The medical staff was able to put a special valve in his tracheotomy, and John was able to speak to his family. Praise the Lord! It was the best Christmas present ever! Merry Christmas Eve!”
Adsit and three other bicycle officers were hit by a driver who apparently suffered a medical emergency as they monitored a protest of hundreds of students from Denver’s East High School. His family says his being able to speak was a Christmas gift to them.
The students were protesting a decision not to prosecute a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri in the death of an unarmed black man.
