TUOLUMNE, Calif. — A deputy discovered an unexpected passenger upon returning to his patrol car after a call Wednesday.

Deputy Hammell saw a suspicious vehicle in a local parking lot and went to go investigate.

Hammell left the door of his patrol vehicle open while he went to go speak with the occupants, according to a Facebook post written by the department.

When he returned, he found a lost dog waiting for him. While Ruger curled up on the front seat, Hammell found his owner’s address on his collar and returned him home.

The department said the family had been looking all night for Ruger, and were very happy to see him.
