MONTANA VISTA, Texas — An off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent, who was previously arrested for a domestic violence incident last week, is accused of shooting a man in the head and attempting to shoot his wife on Tuesday at a home in Montana Vista.
Alberto Montelongo, 40, was arrested early Tuesday morning on suspicion of taking his wife, Angelica Parra, 48, and her boyfriend, Jesus Rodriguez, 36, as hostages during a standoff that lasted for several hours with El Paso County Sheriff’s Office at a home on the 13900 block of Bradley Road, officials said.
Deputies responded to a call of a shot fired in a family-violence related situation at the home at about 10:45 p.m. on Monday, sheriff officials said. Montelongo barricaded himself in the home with the two victims.
According to a criminal complaint affidavit, Rodriguez told deputies that he went to visit his girlfriend at about 10:15 p.m. at the Montana Vista home.
While Rodriguez was at the home, Montelongo entered and questioned him about his relationship with Parra. Montelongo then told Rodriguez that “this was going to end today,” the affidavit states.
Montelongo pulled out a handgun from his pants and aimed the weapon at Rodriguez and Parra, the affidavit states. Parra told deputies that she stood in front of Rodriguez and attempted to calm Montelongo.
Montelongo allegedly fired a shot and struck Rodriguez in the head. The bullet lodged in the center of Rodriguez’s brain, the affidavit states.
Rodriguez fell on the floor with a large amount of blood coming out of him, then crawled to a restroom and called 911, the affidavit states.
Montelongo then allegedly attempted to shoot Parra, but the gun failed to fire, the affidavit states. Parra grabbed the gun as Montelongo tried to fix the weapon by tapping on the magazine, the document states.
As they struggled for the gun, they went into the kitchen where Montelongo began looking through the drawers to get a knife, the affidavit states. Montelongo then allegedly grabbed a large kitchen knife and Parra attempted to grab the knife, resulting in cuts on her fingers on both of her hands, the affidavit states.
Parra then grabbed the knife and continued to struggle with Montelongo. He allegedly told Parra that “he was going to kill her,” the affidavit states.
Parra managed to break free and ran out of the home, the affidavit states.
Montelongo eventually surrendered to sheriff deputies earlier Tuesday morning. He was arrested in connection with two counts of criminal attempted murder and booked into El Paso County Jail on a bond totaling $300,000.
Rodriguez was taken to Del Sol Medical Center in critical condition, officials said.
According to El Paso County marriage records, Montelongo and Parra were married in February 2014. Parra told deputies she was in the process of filing for a divorce.
This is the second family violence incident Montelongo and Parra were involved in within the past week.
On Jan. 29, deputies responded to a call of an assault at about 6:45 p.m. at a home on the 13900 block of Bradley Road, a complaint affidavit states. When deputies arrived, they found Parra with redness and swelling on her face.
Parra told deputies that Montelongo entered the home through the garage and confront her in the living room, the affidavit states.
Montelongo was allegedly angry that Parra was not answering his phone calls and over other phone calls she had with other men, the affidavit states.
Parra told Montelongo that “they were separated and there was nothing to discuss,” the affidavit states. Parra went into the bedroom to lay on the bed and Montelongo allegedly followed her.
Montelongo allegedly grabbed Parra by the hair, yelled profanities at her and began slamming her head several times against the bed’s headboard, the affidavit states. Para told deputies she was unable to get away from Montelongo. Along with injures to the back of her head, Parra alsohad injures to the right side of her face.
Montelongo then left the home and Parra called the sheriff’s office, the affidavit states.
Montelongo was arrested the next day on suspicion of assault against a family member causing bodily injury. He was booked into El Paso County Jail on a $2,500 bond, according to jail records. He bailed out of jail several hours later.
Officials said that Montelongo has been with the Border Patrol for 11 years and is a supervisory agent assigned to the Ysleta station.
