DENVER — A police officer shot a man who reportedly used a hammer to break the window of a patrol car where the officer sat doing paperwork Sunday.

James Bradley, 32, was admitted to Denver Health medical Center for treatment where he is in serious condition, The Denver Post reported. The officer, whose name was not released, suffered minor cuts to his face from shattered glass.

The motive is unknown, but police said the circumstances surrounding the attack suggest a possible suicide-by-cop attempt.

Police spokeswoman Vicki Ferrari said that though not exactly a suicide note, “Suicide-type information” was found on the suspect.

“If it’s released, you’ll see what I mean,” she added.

Bradley appeared to arrive in a rental truck that he parked around the corner from cruiser. Investigators are waiting on a search warrant, but police said a machete was visible inside.

After the shooting, a pile of clothing, a pair of boots and the hammer were found on the ground near the truck.
