GUADALUPE, Ariz. — A felon who opened fire on deputies during a pursuit Wednesday was wounded after deputies returned fire and a second suspect was taken into custody after police released a K-9.
Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez told The Arizona Republic that police responded to calls of shots fired during a gang confrontation Wednesday afternoon. Deputies arrived to discover a suspect fled the scene in a stolen car.
Enriquez said when deputies located and pursued Jason Sanchez-Vasquez, 36, he opened fire on police with a semiautomatic handgun. No officers were hit. Sanchez-Vasquez stole another vehicle during the pursuit and continued to flee.
The suspect then collided with a deputy’s vehicle and continued to shoot at officers, according to the publication. Deputies suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Police returned fire, wounding Sanchez-Vasquez. Sanchez-Vasquez remains in critical condition.
SWAT surrounded a home where another suspect, who was allegedly involved in the initial shooting, and others in a nearby yard were taunting deputies. The suspect was apprehended after police released a K-9. Police told azfamily.com that the “non-compliant” suspect was bitten by the K-9.
Sanchez-Vasquez has several previous convictions in Arizona, including felonies involving weapons.
