CARROLLTON, Ill. — A routine traffic stop turned out to be a pretty hot topic when a Greene County sheriff’s deputy’s squad car caught fire and burned to a crisp.
Greene County Sheriff Rick Graham said a deputy had made a traffic stop at 9:22 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Illinois Route 108 and Providence Road.
“As he was getting the information, he noticed smoke coming from under his dash and grabbed a fire extinguisher,” Graham said. “However, flames began bursting from under the dash, and he was not able to douse the fire.”
By the time the Carrollton Fire Protection District arrived on the scene, which took just a few minutes, Graham said, the 2006 Ford Crown Victoria was totally engulfed in flames.
No one was injured in the fire, and the vehicle is covered under the county’s insurance policy.
Graham said Carrollton Fire Chief Tim Thaxton told him Thursday that the cause of the fire was either from overload or a short-circuit in the electrical wiring.
