LAS VEGAS, Nev. — One of the Las Vegas police officers involved in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday night at Nellis Boulevard and Washington Avenue has died from his injuries.
“Losing an officer to a shooting or anything like this is very tragic but we’re a family and we’ll continue to do our jobs,” Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie said at a news conference this morning.
Officer Milburn “Millie” Beitel, 30, died at 1:30 a.m. at University Medical Center following surgery. He had been with the department six years.
The other officer, 25, and a three-year veteran of the department, remains at UMC in critical condition. He has not been identified.
Police investigators are still at the scene of the 9 p.m. crash. The intersection of Nellis and Washington remains closed.
Gillespie said the officers had responded to a “self-initiated” call. It appeared they were in the process of clearing that call and were some distance from where it originated when the crash occured.
Gillespie would not venture into how the accident happened or how fast the police cruiser may have been traveling at the time.
