Pop star Beyoncé has posted a video and message in tribute to the five officers slain in an ambush Thursday during a police protest.
The video, which depicts the Texas flag and the names of the five fallen officers, is accompanied with a note calling for peace:
“Rest in peace to the officers whose lives were senselessly taken yesterday in Dallas. I am praying for a full recovery of the seven others injured. No violence will create peace. Every human life is valuable. We must be the solution. Every human being has the right to gather in peaceful protest without suffering more unnecessary violence. To effect change we must show love in the face of hate and peace in the face of violence.”
Beyoncé has a rocky history with the law enforcement community. Earlier this year, her live performance at Super Bowl 50 and her music video for the single ‘Formation’ were widely criticized for a perceived anti-police message. Some called for a boycott of the artist’s world tour, including the Miami Fraternal Order of Police. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani also weighed in, slamming the singer for her performance.
“I think it was outrageous,” Giuliani told Fox News at the time. “I thought it was really outrageous that she used it as a platform to attack police officers who are the people who protect her and protect us, and keep us alive.”
Earlier this week, Beyoncé aired her feelings on the recent fatal police shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile via a call to action posted on her website.
“We’re going to stand up as a community and fight against anyone who believes that murder or any violent action by those who are sworn to protect us should consistently go unpunished,” she wrote.
