SOLANO COUNTY, Calif. — Three officers were injured Monday morning after an inmate attempted to escape using a fire-extinguisher.

Joseph Michael Schabert, 24, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of probation violation and failure to appear for a felony drug case, and was in the holding area of Solano County jail when he took off running, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

He ran into a small room and was approached by three deputies, and managed to grab and deploy the extinguisher while in handcuffs.

One of the officers deployed a TASER and subdued Schabert.

Schabert is expected to face additional felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon, battery on a peace officer and attempted escape from a jail.

The three officers and Schabert were taken to the hospital to be treated for exposure to the fire extinguisher chemicals and were released.

The department is investigating the escape attempt and will look closely at its policies to determine if any changes are necessary, according to the report.
