STATEN ISLAND — The first annual “Honor Our Police” rally was held in New York Saturday to remember the slain members of the NYPD.

The event sought to honor the positive work done by NYPD officers and the sacrifice of officers slain in the line of duty.

Among the fallen officers mentioned was Rocco Laurie, who was shot in the back and killed while on patrol in the Lower East Side in 1972.

“What happened to Rocco Laurie was terrible,” said attendee Dolores Bannon. “And I remember it like it was yesterday...I’m just so proud of my children for serving in the police force. And I thank them for their service and for joining the NYPD.”

Saturday’s rally was organized by retired police officers Ken Peterson, George Coyne, Joe Brandefine and Jack Furnari because they wanted to highlight the heroics and sacrifices of the NYPD, according to Silive.

About 700 people attended the South Beach rally.
