Calif. officer fatally shot during traffic stop; suspect arrested

SALINAS, Calif. — Salinas Police Officer Jorge David Alvarado was fatally shot while conducting a traffic stop late Friday, reported ABC 10.

According to the report, Alvarado had pulled over a driver for a traffic violation before an exchange of gunfire. Police said Alvarado’s actions helped them arrest the suspect.

“The officer stayed in the fight all the way to the end. Ultimately, he paid the price for it. He gave his life for it,” said Roberto Filice, the Salinas Chief of Police. “The police department lost a son but the community lost a hero.”

Alvarado, 30, was a five-year veteran of the department, according to ABC 10.

The incident remains under investigation.
