CALGARY, Canada — Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of killing a Calgary police officer on New Year’s Eve.
According to the Calgary Herald, Sgt. Andrew Harnett, 37, was struck and dragged while attempting a traffic stop. Harnett was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries soon after.
“Because of some senseless criminal actions our service and our community is mourning on this first day of 2021,” Calgary police Chief Mark Neufeld said at a news conference. “More importantly, a family has lost a son, a sibling has lost a brother, a spouse has lost a partner and many, many members of our service have lost a really good friend.”
The two suspects, aged 17 and 19, turned themselves in Friday after a citywide manhunt, according to the Herald. Both are charged with first-degree murder.
Harnett became a police officer 12 years ago after serving two and a half years as a military police officer, according to the Herald.
His brother, Jason Harnett, told the Herald that his brother wanted to be a police officer “since the very beginning.”
“He was with Crime Stoppers, he would hang out with the local cops and go on ride-alongs. He was just very focused on that — he was very determined,” Jason said.
