MAUI — A Maui officer arrested five times in the past year has drawn criticism from the community as she remains on the force, HawaiiNewsNow reported.

Rachel Garvin’s string of arrests beginning in January 2015 range from child endangerment to DUI.

“Misuse and abuse of alcohol and drugs does not discriminate by what company you work for, what government agency you work for, what race, nationality, or religion you are … alcohol strikes anybody,” Arkie Koehl, Mothers against Drunk Driving spokesperson, told the news site.

The first incident occurred in 2014 when Garvin went to pick up her son from school and school officials noticed she was intoxicated. They let her leave and she crashed into a guardrail.

After the crash, responding officers didn’t give her a field sobriety test and allowed her to leave the scene with a friend. Internal probes stemming from the incident turned into a criminal investigation. Garvin pleaded no contest to child endangerment and was given probation for a year.

In May 2015, she was arrested for driving drunk and refusing to submit to a breathalyzer. The department sent out a press release but failed to mention it was Garvin’s second arrest or that she violated the terms of her probation.

These two incidents led to three more arrests including missing court and violating her probation, according to the report.

The eight-year veteran officer was currently assigned to desk duties with her credentials and firearm surrendered.
