GREENSBORO, N.C. — The 20-year-old man shot and killed outside the Guilford County Courthouse in downtown Greensboro around lunchtime Monday had links to shootings nearly three years ago in High Point.

Avion Imeen McLean of Laurinburg in eastern North Carolina was shot and killed along Eugene Street in downtown Greensboro near the courthouse by assailants who fled in a car.

McLean was charged in shootings and with illegal weapons possession in High Point late in 2017.

McLean was arrested by High Point Police Department officers in December 2017 after a traffic stop at Green Drive and Ward Avenue. Police said they found four handguns, two of which had been reported stolen. The caliber of the guns matched ones used in a shooting on Thissell Street, The High Point Enterprise reported at the time.

McLean also was linked to a shooting at Green Drive and University Parkway in east High Point nearly three years ago in which a 22-year-old man was shot in the leg.

In Monday’s shooting, the Greensboro Police Department hadn’t made any arrests as of Tuesday afternoon.

Two other people were injured in Monday’s shooting, one of whom was in critical condition at an area hospital. The other had injuries that officials said were not considered to be life-threatening.

One of the people injured was the apparent target of the shooting, Sheriff Danny Rogers said in a statement Tuesday. After that person was struck by gunfire, he went into the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office and was pulled to safety by deputies.

Rogers said that at least four bullets struck the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, three of them penetrating windows to enter offices used by staff. No one in the sheriff’s office was injured.

Anyone with information can call Greensboro/Guilford Crimestoppers at 336-373-1000.
