The Austin (Texas) Police Department recently praised Officer Adam Reinhart’s resilience and highlighted department initiatives aimed at helping officers deal with traumatic incidents. Reinhart has been involved in four different incidents, including being shot in the stomach, in 15 months.
In this Wellness Brief, Emily Hitchings and Greg Friese discuss the vital role of trained peer supporters, who provide immediate and ongoing emotional support, help normalize reactions and guide officers through reintegration.
“It’s critical that agencies are well prepared to help officers come back (to duty),” Hitchings said.
Hitchings emphasize the importance of structured return-to-work plans that address wellness, skills refresh, policy updates and family support, ensuring officers are prepared, mentally and physically, to return to duty.
