Richmond police fired on a man and arrested him this afternoon after he raised a shotgun toward an officer.

The 35-year-old Richmond resident, who was not hit, was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a firearm at a peace officer and for firing a weapon into the air, according to police.

The confrontation occurred shortly after 3 p.m., after police received several calls of shots fired in the 1900 block of San Joaquin Street, Lt. Ed Medina said.

Witnesses told police two men were walking along the street and firing shots aimlessly into the air. The men were gone when officers arrived. But several blocks away in the 1400 block of Carlson Boulevard, officers found two men walking who matched witnesses’ descriptions.

When police tried to approach the pair, the men ran. During the foot chase, one of the men turned around and lifted a shotgun and pointed it at an officer, who then fired several shots at the man before he was arrested.

The other man escaped, Medina said.
