BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A “relationship triangle” resulted in a 22-year-old woman being stabbed, others assaulted with broken glass, a 15-person brawl, and a police chase that reached nearly 100 mph chase, according to a press release from Battle Creek police Sunday.
A 22-year-old and 28-year-old woman are in Calhoun County Jail facing several violent felonies after police responded to a report of 15 people fighting in the lobby of Battle Creek’s Baymont by Wyndham hotel at noon Saturday, according to the release.
Witnesses told police the 28-year-old had assaulted several people with broken glass, and a 22-year-old had to receive medical attention for “cuts and wounds,” but by Sunday morning police reviewed evidence that allegedly positioned the 22-year-old as an instigator of the fight, and she has been taken into custody. The suspects in the incident have not been named by police.
Ninety minutes after police responded to the hotel fight, the 28-year-old suspect was reportedly involved in another conflict, police said; this time a different 22-year-old woman was stabbed with a knife.
By 4 p.m. the 28-year-old hadn’t been apprehended, but called police “and wanted to share her story,” police said, claiming she was a initial victim in the hotel altercation.
“Officers made contact with her and took her into custody without further incident,” according to the release. “Police believe most of the people involved knew each other, and that the conflict started with a relationship triangle.”
It’s not clear if a high-speed chase Saturday involved someone in the romantic entanglement.
When officers arrived at the hotel Saturday, people were dispersing and reportedly loathe to speak to the authorities. One person backed into a police patrol car with an officer inside, who was uninjured, police said, before driving away at high speed. The driver reached nearly 100 mph in Leroy Township before police chose to stop pursuing for safety reasons. They are continuing to investigate the driver.
