Patrick McCrone, CEO of Limitless Gear and co-developer of the OPFOR MC-R, said he worked with his engineer buddies on the first versions of his product design. In fact, the first mockup was done on erector set parts.
The mock up worked pretty well, McCrone said. Then, an aerospace engineer, Darrell Stevens, helped continue the product’s evolution by using CAD and testing prototypes generated from a 3D printer. Stevens later helped found Limitless Gear and serves as the company’s CTO.
“The rest is history,” he said.
Here are four specific ways the OPFOR MC-R is a best in class.
1. It’s historically efficient.
The OPFOR MC-R uses a block in the shape of a standard AR-15 magazine catch to secure the magazine. Leaf springs formed from the body of the OPFOR MC-R create the tension that holds the magazine against the block. It works with most magazines that fit an AR-15.
What’s great about it is that it does not require threading into MOLLE / PAL straps. Plus, the OPFOR MC-R magazine carriers mount and dismount in seconds for rapid mission realignment.
McCrone said the method of weaving through webbing to attach accessories to a MOLLE platform is now 21 years old. No one has come up with a way to make attaching things quicker, even though tactical gear has changed over the past 15 years.
“We’ve changed that history with our product,” he said.
2. It holds magazines upside down.

“For cummerbund magazine carriers, this means the user won’t be digging magazines out of their armpits upside down,” he said.
The second most obvious advantage over traditional pouches is the lack of straps, bungees and snaps. Because of this, the OPFOR MC-R is lighter than most setups and significantly more flexible.
Also, since it is made of high strength polymer, it is rugged, protects feed lips and works in wet environments.
3. It offers very flexible mounting options.
The OPFOR MC-R also can be mounted baseplates up in the traditional manner. Since the pouches use RSEE mounting, gear can be configured quickly.
The OPFOR MC-R pops on and off the webbing with a sliding locking bar that inserts polymer “teeth” into the webbing. It works perfectly on any stiff webbing.
“It is simple and secure,” McCrone said.
The RSEE platform also allows OPFOR MC-R mag holders to be stacked neatly together for multiple magazines.
4. It’s very easy to pop magazines in and out.
The OPFOR MC-R is slightly wider than a standard magazine, making it easy to pop magazines in.
Magazines also fit in either direction. There is a block at the base of the well that prevents over-insertion, guaranteeing the magazines will catch in the holder the first time.
Removing a magazine is just as simple: Grasp the magazine, twist and lift. The twisting action is less than 5 degrees.
