Radar-like device helps police detect texting drivers

The device, which would work much like a radar gun, could differentiate whether the occupants of a vehicle are texting or talking on their phone

The Virginia-based company ComSonics is currently developing a device that can alert police when a mobile phone is being used inside a vehicle.

The device, which would work much like a radar gun, could differentiate whether the occupants of a vehicle are texting or talking on their phone, by detecting radio frequencies that emit from a vehicle when a cell phone is in use.

The ability to detect texting would prove useful in states like Virginia where adults can legally talk on their phones but cannot text.

The company is awaiting legislative approval and commitment from law enforcement before they move into production stages.

Malcolm McIntyre of ComSonics said that though there are privacy concerns that come with the technology, the equipment could not decrypt information that is transmitted by drivers on their mobile phones.
