TASER International, best known for creating less lethal ECDs and the information-sharing cloud service website Evidence.com announced Thursday that it has acquired a tech start-up that turns smartphones and tablets into digital picture frames.

The Seattle-based company Familiar allows its users to broadcast photos and videos to each others’ devices – a technology that interested the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and Dropbox, according to the New York Times.

About 7 years ago, TASER developed a small camera to attach to ECDs, helmets, and glasses to film interactions that could potentially defend legal cases in which a TASER was deployed.

Familiar’s ability to securely move video and images from one device to another is the driving force behind the acquisition, according to the report.

“For us, that’s super important,” said General Manager of Evidence.com Jason Droege.
