ORLANDO, Fla. —An Orlando police officer is under investigation, accused of striking a pedestrian and leaving the scene.
The incident was caught on video by a city of Orlando security camera.
The investigating officer said the pedestrian, 36-year old Tetrish Nunn, was at fault for crossing Hughey Avenue against the crossing signal, but the officer, Michael Fiorentino-Tyburski, was found at fault for leaving.
The man, who is apparently homeless, borrowed a cellphone and reported that the officer struck him and left.
According to the report, the officer said he stopped to ask Nunn if he was OK, and Nunn stated “Yes, I’m OK,” and after three minutes, the officer left.
While still laying on the sidewalk, Nunn called 911.
“Hello, I want to report an Orlando police officer who just hit me with his car,” said Nunn.
“Did the officer say he was coming back? Or what did he say when he hit you?” the dispatcher said.
“He just hit me, you know what I’m saying? He blamed it on me and took off,” said Nunn.
Later, an unidentified woman, not the officer in question, called 911 to report that the man was injured and needed medical attention.
“When the officer hit him with with his car it was kind of like, it wasn’t a tap. It did break some skin,” the woman said.
Police radio calls indicate dispatchers had to ask the officer if indeed he was the one who hit the pedestrian. He responds with a question.
“We were just trying to find out if that was you?” said the dispatcher.
“I’m not there any more. Who called it in?” said Fiorentio-Tyburksi.
Police said that due to an ongoing investigation, they cannot provide a comment.
Nunn listed his address as the Coalition for the Homeless.
A spokeswoman at the coalition could not verify whether Nunn is or has ever been a resident there.
