PONTIAC, Mich. — A man was sentenced to at least 100 years in prison in the shooting death of Livonia Police Officer Larry Nehasil.
Terry Bowling, 49, showed no reaction as Oakland County Circuit Judge Michael Warren handed down the sentence Wednesday, according to the Detroit Free Press. Bowling was outside a home in January when his brother David Bowling and Nehasil died in a shootout. Sources say undercover officers were tracking the brothers because of alleged links to Detroit-area home break-ins.
Because he was committing a felony — home invasion — when Nehasil was killed, Terry Bowling received a first-degree murder charge. He attempted to drive away after the shooting but was captured.
Despite statements from Attorney Randall Lewis that claimed Bowling had no direct role in the fatal incident, Warren sentenced him to the higher end of the state’s guidelines.
Bowling had “utter disregard for the law, a selfish man unwilling or unable to live in a civilized world,” Warren said. He reportedly had a history of drug use.
Wife Linda Nehasil, mother of two teenage sons, described the effect of her husband’s loss.
“I miss Larry with every ounce of my being, and I so very wanted to be with him,” she said.
