ATLANTA — In a plea for safer driving, Atlanta Police released shocking bodycam video on Tuesday of a car crashing into an officer.

In the video, Officer Steven Randerson stands in the breakdown lane beside a busy freeway, just in front of his cruiser. Randerson was investigating a traffic accident, police said. About 20 seconds into the video, while Randerson’s back is turned, a car crashes into him, knocking him to the ground.

According to police, the driver “was traveling too fast for the wet conditions” and lost control. The officer was seriously injured and remains off-duty during his recovery, police said.

Now, the department is reminding drivers to abide by Georgia’s Move Over Law.

“We are grateful that Officer Randerson is in the healing process. This could have ended so much worse,” police said on Facebook. “We remind motorists of Georgia’s Move Over Law which was put in place to avoid exactly this type of thing from happening.”

The driver was cited for going too fast for the conditions, according to police.
