Napolitano stands firm on airline security needs

Says the procedure for airline security screenings isn’t likely to change anytime soon

TRENTON, N.J. — Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says the procedure for airline security screenings isn’t likely to change anytime soon.

Napolitano said Monday at the Trenton train station in New Jersey that few passengers receive pat-down searches and that minimally invasive searches must be weighed against security risks.

She says pat-downs are the only choice for those who decide they don’t want to go through body scans or X-rays. She says that’s because a security threat remains.

Napolitano appeared with Sen. Frank Lautenberg at an event that was to warn travelers to be vigilant as they head into the holiday travel season.
