Police1 trainer Gary Klugiewicz received the following alert through a law enforcement list serve. It’s advisable to check with your fleet manager or agency mechanic to discuss possible ways to safeguard against the access technique described here. If you have ideas to share, please e-mail the Police1 Editor.
According to the discussion list, a video is circulating the Internet that discusses a strategy for breaking into the trunk of a Crown Victoria squad car in search of police gear. The method is described as follows:
1. Use a hammer or other blunt instrument to break out the passenger side backup light on the trunk area of the Crown Vic (See photo below: “Access”)
2. Push back on the plastic light mount and knock the mount out of place. There is no barrier between the plastic mount and the inside of the trunk. (See photo below: “Inside View”)
3. Use your hand to reach to your left and pull on the emergency release catch that is mounted on the inside of the trunk latch (See photo below: “Trunk Release”)
4. Pull on the trunk release tab and the trunk will pop open giving you full access to the contents.
Apparently, the description claims, this method of entry will not set off a car alarm.
