A police officer was sent to the hospital for exposure to PCP after chasing down a drug dealer, police reports said.

Bashir Allen, 19, of Garfield Avenue, was charged Friday night with possession of drugs with intent to distribute, hindering apprehension and resisting arrest, police said yesterday.

Officers in an unmarked car approached a crowd hanging outside a home at Stegman Street near Ocean Avenue just after 7 p.m., reports said. One of the men, Allen, was smoking a “blunt,” which is marijuana rolled in cigar paper, said Police Lt. Edgar Martinez.

As the cops approached, Allen fled toward Garfield Avenue, police said. One of the officers chased him on foot while the other pursued him by car, cutting off his escape at Garfield Avenue, police said.

As Allen ran, the police officer in pursuit saw him discard several white packages of suspected narcotics, reports said. Police were only able to retrieve some of the objects that Allen dropped because some people from the group he had been with were running behind him and picking up the packages, police said.

When cops caught up with Allen, he poured out some liquid from a clear container as the arresting officer held onto him, reports said.

The officer was taken for treatment to Jersey City Medical Center for exposure to PCP after complaining of a headache, police reports said.
