SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco police shot at and may have injured a wanted parolee they were pursuing in the Sunset District Sunday afternoon, officials said.
Two officers patrolling near 23rd Avenue and Pacheco Street about 4:30 p.m. recognized a man sitting in a car as a paroled felon who was wanted by police, Officer Maria Oropeza said.
As the officers approached the man’s vehicle, he gunned his motor and drove toward them, Oropeza said. One or both of the officers fired at the man, but he drove off, she said.
Later in the afternoon, police found the car abandoned near Majestic and Lakeview avenues in the Oceanview neighborhood, she said. The car bore signs that the man - whom police would not identify - might have been shot, said Oropeza.
Officers knew the man’s girlfriend lived in the area so they searched her residence but could not find the man, Oropeza said. Police were searching for the parolee Sunday night.
The shooting is being investigated by the department’s office of management control and homicide division, as well as the district attorney and Office of Citizen Complaints, as are all officer-involved shootings in San Francisco, Oropeza said.
