ANDERSON, Ind. — An Anderson K-9 officer shot during a pursuit after a bank robbery has died.
The PNC Bank in the 2900 block of Nichol Avenue in Anderson was held up just after 9 a.m. Saturday by an armed man who fled the scene on a bicycle, police said.
After tracking the robber’s scent to a nearby soybean field, officers released the dog, named Magnum, to capture the man.
When the K-9 got close, the man, who was later identified as Joseph Turner, opened fire on the dog, shooting him in the face, police said.
The dog was rushed into surgery, but he had to be put down early Monday, police said.
Turner was arrested a short time after the shooting.
