WEARE, N.H. — A fund set up for a Weare police dog diagnosed with cancer last month has received over $20,000 in donations.
Today, Weare Middle School students will present Mica, a 4-year- old Belgian Malanois, and her handler, Sgt. Joseph Kelly, an additional $850 to help her out. The kids started a collection box and raised the money independently of the school, said Jessica Potter, the school’s assistant principal.
“Some students promised their parents they wouldn’t eat ice cream for a week, some broke piggy banks, and others did odd jobs around the house. One student gave $100, which was all of their Christmas money,” Potter said. " It was just really nice to see the kids come together to support her.”
Don Lyons, a New Boston resident and friend of the police department, set up Mica’s treatment fund and said contributions over the past three weeks have exceeded $20,000.
The dog, which was diagnosed with lymphoma in early November, has completed three chemotherapy treatments so far and responded well, Lyons said. She has an additional 16 sessions in this cycle and may need further treatment later on, he said.
Donations can be sent to the Weare Police Department K-9 Relief Fund, c/o TD Bank, P.O. Box 301, Weare 03281; or dropped off at any local TD Bank branch.
